The UMC Candlelighters organization is composed of parents and friends of UMC pediatric patients with cancer. This group is a very active organization, with its primary purpose being support for children fighting cancer and their families. The Candlelighters organization also serves as a support group for the entire pediatric oncology program at UMC, helping to provide financial assistance as well as many other types of assistance for the Children’s Cancer Program.
The UMC Candlelighters organization was established in 1980 by a group of parents and friends of children with cancer treated here at UMC. The original and continuing goals of UMC Candlelighters are to provide a resource for families of children with cancer - helping each other deal with the many adjustments and stresses brought about by the child's diagnosis - and to provide support for the clinical and research aspects of the Children's Cancer Program at UMC.
